7 Tricks to Help You Stick to Your Fitness Goals

  1. Have Someone Keep You Accountable: When it is hard for me to stick to my goals, I have found that having a friend help me stay on track is so helpful! It is so motivating when you make yourself tell someone whether or not you completed your workout that day or if you ate within your desired caloric intake.
  2. Keep Track of Your Wins on a Calendar: If there is one thing that has helped me with my goals the most, it is definitely this tip. What I like to do is associate a specific color with a specific goal. I make a key on my calendar, for example, a pink dot means that I completed my work out that day, a blue dot means I met my water goal, etc. Whenever I complete that goal for the day, I not only get the satisfaction of checking it off on the calendar, but I have the extra motivation of accountability because the calendar is right on my fridge and everyone that sees it will know if I did my workout.
  3. Progress Pictures: It is so easy to get discouraged these days, we don’t need the number on the scale to add any extra discouragement. And that number, by the way, is just a number. It doesn’t mean you are healthy or beautiful, and it doesn’t mean you are fat or ugly. The way I believe shows the most accurate representation of your progress is definitely progress photos because when you look in the mirror every day, you don’t notice the small changes but over time, the small changes add up!
  4. Set Reminders on Your Phone: Especially at the beginning of a new goal, before that goal becomes a habit, it is easy to forget what your goal is and fall back into your usual routine. By setting a reminder on your phone, you won’t be able to forget!
  5. Plan Ahead: I have always had trouble with my diet because I often made the excuse “I don’t have anything healthy to eat”. By making a list for myself of what I was going to eat through the week, I was able to get all of the groceries I needed ahead of time and it made eating healthy way easier!
  6. Give Yourself Some Leeway: My favorite tip is to stop being so strict with ourselves. We want to lead a healthy lifestyle, not a healthy diet. When we allow ourselves a cheat meal here and there, we won’t feel deprived and we will enjoy the process so much more!
  7. Don’t Give Up- Make Adjustments: The last tip I think we all need to do a better job at when trying to achieve our goals, is to adjust them as time goes on. We often set goals with crazy expectations for ourselves. For a person that never works out, setting a goal to go to the gym every day might not be as realistic as setting a goal to work out for at least 10 minutes every day. If we don’t meet those expectations at first, we often give up and don’t believe we can do it. I know we can meet those goals eventually, but at first, it is best to make some adjustments.
