Is the Keto Diet A Healthy Way to Lose Weight?

Let me just answer this quickly. No.

When I was younger I used to wish that all the healthy foods I didn’t like would actually be unhealthy and all the junk food I wanted would be healthy. But I’m not magic and neither are all of the people on the Keto diet.

I am not saying you wont lose weight. Don’t get me wrong, if you are at a calorie deficit, you will lose weight. That is the way our bodies work. Some people need less calories and some need more. But that doesn’t mean that what you put into your body doesn’t matter. Now, I don’t believe that the creators of the Keto diet intended for people to eat all the butter and bacon they wanted, or even to ditch all fruits and vegetables. They probably wanted people to consume healthy fats like avocados and nuts, and to avoid carbs like bread and sugar. However, the diet has turned into the prior.

I think so many people are jumping into this diet because it sounds so easy. And although it may be easy to some, it is still a fad diet. Fad diets are so popular because, typically, they work…for a while. Someone can lose quite a bit of weight and feel healthier if they fully follow a fad diet. But when they finish, they gain that weight right back. This happens because most fad diets are either very extreme, require low caloric intake, or withhold an essential part of your dietary needs. The Keto diet withholds an essential nutrient, carbs.

As a carb lover I get a large portion of my calories from carbs. My body prefers it that way. I get to eat plenty of nutrient dense fruits and vegetables without worry. I also enjoy eating foods high in fats! In my opinion, fats and carbs are both good for you, you just need to figure out what works best for you. As long as you are choosing healthy options you will be fine. I like to eat at least one gram of protein for every pound that I weigh. I then make sure I am eating within my desired daily caloric intake and from there choose what sounds good when it comes to carbs and fats.

If you choose to follow the Keto diet remember: fruits and vegetables are part of every healthy diet; you shouldn’t cut out all carbs, but rather lower your intake; And lastly, there are healthy fats and unhealthy fats- choose wisely.
